Mobile online: not just for early adopters
Mobile online abounds! Finally young people are starting to get their piece of the action with 51% of young people accessing the internet via their phone. With better infrastructure, all-inclusive surfing packages and functionality improving across the more modest handset ranges, the world of web and walk has become accessible to young people. Okay, so it’s all very well that they’re online, but what does that mean in real terms; how much has it got their attention? Well, of this half of young people, they are spending on average nearly 3 hours a week online.

Young People: Seriously Green
There’s so much written about young people being the most antisocial of groups – no respect for their elders, community, ‘selves, etc. But we can report that ‘green’ ethical and sustainability issues are high up on their agenda. Indeed, half of 19-25 year-olds said that they would pay more for something that is ethically sound. But they come across as having a wider sense of ‘taking care’, not just of the environment, but of themselves and others.

There’s a lot of concern from the public at large about privacy in the digital age. This is especially the case when it comes to concern for young people. With sexting (sending explicit images, etc between digital devices) being reported and cases of parties being gatecrashed after ‘open’ invites on social networking sites, there’s a great deal of concern to protect youth from themselves.

It is fair to say that youth in the UK aren’t exactly having the best of times when it comes to work. However this doesn’t mean they are down and out, oh no no no. Face’s recent Tech Tribe survey has revealed that even though work may not be easy to come by, young people are still up for it and their attitude towards work cannot be questioned. Yesterdays post on Vice magazine’s ad agency Virtue is a great example of how young people are making a postive impact and changing the work environments around them.
So how exactly do the young folk in the UK feel about work?

If I was asked to summarize how youth feel about their economic future in a quote by a Former U.S President, it would go a little something like this:
‘The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time’
Abraham Lincoln

As we established in our last blog entry (It’s a matter of life and debt…) debt amongst youth is at an all time high (or is that low?). If you are inclined to believe the media the reason for the red is the environment we have grown up in, a world where being significantly in debt is accepted as the norm. Yes, this is a good point and was very relevant a couple of years ago, however Tech Tribe tells us that this attitude is beginning to change, 60% of our Tech Tribe respondents disagree that “debt is fine because everyone else is in it too”.

We are going to kick off Youth Lab by sharing some of the research we have been doing on the all encompassing topic of… the recession. It seems on the surface the general thinking is that just because people are in full time education they won’t be affected by the current economic crisis. I mean students are protected right? They have doting parents, living at home, or in halls, and you can’t exactly get made redundant from school or uni can you? It is an easy assumption to make that the safety net of full time education saves you from ‘real life’ problems however Face’s recent Tech Tribe research results say something different.

We are going to discuss loads of recession topics over the next few months, but before we do, let’s put a stake in the ground and take a look at the current financial situation.
When you’re young, there may not be the responsibility of having a mortgage, 2 cars, 4 kids and a dog, but that does not stop you from getting in to some serious debt. Tech Tribe reports that a staggering 48% of 19-25 year olds have over £20,000 in personal debt.

Tech Tribe 2007 report is a detailed analysis of the attitudes and thoughts of almost 3000 young people, covering both students and those in work. The report illustrated very clearly that this is a digital generation, in control of their relationship with media owners and brands and who put a high value on their own creativity and that of their friends.
Some highlights from the report in 2007:
Connected
This generation of young people want to be entertained like any other, however, as Tech Tribe 07 shows, they are not glued to their TV sets; they are consuming the content that they want when they want via the internet and downloading/streaming it for free. They are in control of the media they consume and the advertising they see.
